Well we pulled into New York last night and the first task of the evening was to completely empty the truck of all of our stuff (no small task). Evidently, down here in Queens, leaving anything in the truck is an invitation to theft. So our stuff is now in various places in the basement until we leave on Sunday or Monday. I’m not sure if I’ll know how to deal with driving in an empty vehicle. It’s such an alien experience these days. Not that I’m even sure that we’ll be driving anywhere, mind you. This is New York after all.
I told Chuck on the way in that I wanted to go down to The Village at some point and he hesitantly said OK. Seems he lived in NY for 20 years and has never been to the village. I think it’s high time we went. Going to the Castro was the first thing Tra and I did in San Francisco, so I have to at least visit the Village here, or I’ll feel I’ve missed something. Perhaps I’ll look up Baby Heather, if I can find a phone number for her….
Yesterday was a delight. We went to visit Molly Devon and spent four hours or so chatting away. It seems we have a similar mind set on many things and we hit it off like fast friends. She has invited me to come back and stay for a while in the winter. We’ll see where I am at that time, but it is certainly a welcome option. Molly has agreed to check out my book when it is finished with an eye to possibly publishing it (she publishes a small number of independents in addition to her own book). She has also agreed to be officially the first person to want to be a stopping point on my walkabout road that I’m creating. Notice I have changed the name here because I’m still thinking about what I want to call it and I don’t want to set it in stone in my mind before I’m done chewing on it. She has given me a few contacts to touch base with along the way and some resources too, so I’m in business!
We had a great conversation about a lot of different topics and I think she may be meeting me out at “Thing in the Woods” at the end of the month. It would be good to see her again. I’m working on the ritual I want to do for Thing in the Woods and getting the logistics worked out in my head. Not knowing how many people will show up is causing a little difficulty in creating the logistics, but I’m looking at various contingencies and it should be fine. I’m going to actually write it all out before I get there so I have an idea of what’s going on.
I’m playing with the idea of going west from here instead of east again. I feel like I’ve been in the northeast for too long. I think I may go out and see my mother for a few days and then possibly head back down to Bloomington for a few days more. I have a CD of information to drop of for a woman starting a store down there and I want to see Daniel before he heads off in whatever direction he is going. So I may do that. It would be good for me to get out of the energy pattern up here especially during the fall seaon because it is so familiar and so comforting and so likely to keep me here longer than I should be here. Best to go before all that starts.
On a completely different note, there seems to be a theme to the trip I am taking. Almost every place I have stopped someone has, of their own accord, without prompting from me, brought up intentional communities or community planning or building developments, etc. It is uncanny. I know that this will all prove useful at some point, but right now it’s just strange (and cool). (Update 2013 – I now live in an intentional community space – one of my own making. It’s small – only 4 people – but I love it.)
Well, we’re headed off today to do some sightseeing and I have fresh NY bagels awaiting me, so I’m signing off for now. I’ll keep you updated as Kelle the tourist makes her way through NY.
