Walkabout 2002 – My Passion – My Career

You Want Me To Do What?I have been thinking long on the subject of my purpose/passion in life. I have my passion worked out. I am passionate about many things some of which have been my passions since I was a young child. As far as this goes, I feel I am somewhat ahead of the game. But here is the crux of the problem.

I know what I love to do. I know where to find it. I want to make my living doing it, but I can see no way to bring that about. The people who need the work that I do are often the same people without the funds to pay me for my services. And when I think about taking it into a corporate venue, the work gets a little muddled in terms that corporate America won’t run screaming from.

Add to this that the work I do requires that the people involved in the process really invest in that process. Sure some of the stuff I do will affect them regardless, but to do the stuff I really love, that requires a commitment from the student and from me. Those type of students are somewhat difficult to come by. It took me three years to put together a group of 12 and some still aren’t invested. And this is a free group.

So now what? The people who really need my help are the ones who can’t pay for it. So how do I get someone else to pay for it? I’m going to call Janice and see if I could work out something with New Hope. Perhaps they could write a grant or something. That would be cool.
