What Is Spiritual Growth?

Definition of Spiritual Growth:  The act of delving into the core of your being to pull out all of the beliefs, patterns, habits, assumptions, and thought patterns that keep you separate from spirit, yourself, and your community.

Why Choose To Grow?
We all choose personal growth for different reasons.  Here are a few that I’ve heard from my clients in the past:

  • Want to be happier
  • Tired of repeating the same patterns over and over
  • Want to reduce their level of anxiety/fear
  • Want better connections with others
  • Seek to understand themselves better
  • Questioning their self-definition

The reasons for pursuing spiritual growth are unique for each person and often show up at major life transition points – death of a loved one, divorce, moving, marriage, relationships ending, major birthdays, job loss, trauma, and other breakdowns.  These are the places where we are most likely to question if what we are doing is working for us.

Which Way Do You Go?

The vast majority of people move away from what they don’t want rather than towards what they do want.  The reason for this is two fold.

  1. Most people don’t think about what they want, they don’t even know what it is, so moving towards it isn’t an option.  Instead they get clear on what they don’t like and move away from that.
  2. Moving towards what you want forces you to make changes even if there isn’t anything really wrong with what is, so it’s more work.  You have to keep growing even when there’s nothing negative to motivate you.

Good vs. Great

But if you’ve ever wondered why most people have a life that’s OK to Good on the quality scale and a few people have lives that are GREAT, this is the reason.  Those who have great lives are willing to give up what is good to get what is great.  They are willing to grow when there is nothing pushing them to do so other than their own inner spirit asking to be expressed.  They have embraced spiritual growth and this act has been reflected in the quality of their lives, their relationships and their sense of self.  They have found peace and passion, joy and ecstasy, and they have learned to be with the more painful sides of life too without being overwhelmed by them.

What Do You Choose?

Spiritual growth isn’t the path for everyone.  It requires courage and strength of character.  It requires commitment to positive change and the ability to consistently motivate yourself towards your goal.  You will have to learn how to sit in uncertainty and get comfortable with discomfort.  You have to take risks to get anywhere in life and this is no different.  So, what do you choose?  Do you want to continue to do what you’ve always done and get what you’ve always gotten?  Or are you ready to step out onto the skinny branches and try something different, something exciting, something scary, but something so worthwhile that your life will change in ways you can’t even imagine right now?  What’s it going to be?
