Walkabout 2002 – Harry Potter Review

I saw the first matinee showing of Harry Potter today (I couldn’t resist, I worked on the book for a few hours too). It was lots of fun. It’s funny, I’ve read all the books, but very little of them has stuck with me, so I didn’t have to worry about the movie being ruined. Of course we know that Harry gets in trouble and then gets out of it and goes on to more years at Hogwarts, that’s why there’s more books. Everything after that is just good cheese. They did a great job with the mandrakes and I have to admit I was personally very happy with the spider scene. But my favorite by far (as in the books) was Dobby, the house elf. He was too funny. I wish he was in it more. All in all, I didn’t mind that the movie was almost 3 hours long (it was that long when you count the huge number of previews). Even the kids didn’t seem to lose interest. I give it a B+.

(Update 2013 – I must have been more enamored of Harry Potter than I thought since I have effectively opened my own version of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the form of the Mastering Magick workshops we are running – starting with Magick 101.  Oh and if you want to see what goes wrong in the real world of magick (think of Colin trying to cast a spell and it blowing up in his face), check out our podcast at Magickal Muckups and Other Cautionary Tales.
