Your Authentic Life Purpose

By Lisa Marie Selow,
Hay House, Inc. Author of A Rebel Chick Mystic’s Guide

Have you ever felt different from others? Do you ever feel like you’re a weirdo, misfit, or even a freak? Have you ever experienced some sort of pain from feeling, as Dame Edith Sitwell wrote, like an “unpopular electric eel set in a pond of goldfish”? Do you ever feel stuck in a box, especially when it comes to your life purpose, career, or calling in life?

It’s not easy being a pioneer, but others have done it and so can you! I’ve been able to carve out a happy, purposeful life for myself. I’ve had a few detours on my path, but view those detours in a positive light as opportunities to learn and grow, instead of as failures. I also learned that it’s okay to reinvent yourself, even many times in your life, even having many aspects to your life purpose. I share my journey here to give you full permission to create an authentic life purpose.

From ages 18 to 25, I worked in the non-profit and legal fields. Working within those systems was disenchanting. I didn’t think that I was making a big enough difference in the world, so I switched gears. At age 26, I discovered the healing field, due to my own quest to heal chronic fatigue syndrome. As I reversed health conditions that traditional medicine said had no cure, I wanted to help others to do the same. So, I enrolled in massage therapy school, working in that field for about five years. It catalyzed my serious studies in personal development, metaphysics, and intuition, what I call “the woo woo arts.” I also became reacquainted with my psychic gifts
from childhood.

In 2005 (at age 33), a couple of years after leaving the massage field, I decided to do psychic readings professionally, which was a huge step outside my comfort zone. About four years later, I really flexed my courage muscles during a stint as a regular reader at a metaphysical store. At the time, I needed to supplement my business income with this job, due to an employment change of my spouse’s. I was worried that I would end up divorced, bankrupt, or homeless, or, all three! Some days, it was hard to function, due to severe stomach or headaches, along with being over caffeinated, sleep-deprived, anxious, exhausted, or depressed. This stressful time in my life was a dark night of the soul. To entertain myself, I bought an extra web domain (punkrockpsychic.com), reasoning that I could develop it in my so-called spare time.

I was really worried that others wouldn’t resonate with this new site of mine, as it combined my psychic and punk rock sides. I desired to do this website for a few years, but procrastinated due to the fear of what others might think of me, which is not very punk rock. I had the domain, but procrastinated further by not adding content.

One day, a psychic reading client at the metaphysical store asked me about her life purpose. This was such a shock to me, since many clients had been asking about things such as their divorces, imprisoned relatives, criminal cases, bankruptcies, unemployment, and serious health challenges. No clients at my job had asked me about life purpose in a long time. In her reading, it came

through for my client to add her nutritional services to her housecleaning website. She was one of those people who even cleaned homes of hoarders. The client wanted to teach about detoxing and cleansing the body. I lovingly egged her on, making the correlations between cleansing a house and the physical body. I said, “Who cares what people think, just do it.” This guidance just flew right out of my mouth, which seemed to surprise both the client and me. (I’m happy to report that on my last day at my job, this client stopped by with a flier of her nutritional and cleansing classes, along with a message of thanks for helping her flex her courage muscles.)

Later, it hit me that I’d been sitting on my new domain, punkrockpsychic.com. It’s as important to me as breathing to walk my own talk, so I knew I had to take action on my own business. As things progressed, I met clients and colleagues who were like-minded. Being more authentic increased my success, happiness, inner peace, and courage levels. For five years prior, I was miserable attempting to conform to the stereotypical, psychic garb such as flowy skirts and crystal jewelry. I thought that I had to do it all that way, to be taken seriously in my field.  However, at events, I noticed that no matter how I presented myself, I attracted unconventional people, including the punk rockers, Goths, hippies, beatniks, motorcyclists, Emo kids, free thinkers, and other rebellious, misfit types.

Even though I loved giving psychic readings, I desired to empower others more. As I write this, I am evolving into the role of life coach, author, and speaker. One of my main messages as a personal development expert is that courage often shows up after you take action. This is what catalyzed me to pursue publication of my book. I didn’t know how people would respond to a leather jacket and black eyeliner clad self-help author and spiritual teacher, but I decided to go for it anyway. My book, A Rebel Chick Mystic’s Guide comes out in November 2012. I’m so thrilled to be able to empower larger numbers of women, helping them live more authentic,
purposeful lives.
